There are several very useful documents that give strategic guidance on including access and inclusive design during planning and oroject management. On most orojects, particularly large public realm projects, including access from the outset and empowering a qualified access consultant to champion access throughout the project life is the most effective and efficient method of ensuring an inclusive outcoime for your client. The guidance listed below explains this 'best practice' approach and advises on the practical implementation from a strategy and management perspective aswell as offering guidance on access and inclusive design in town and country planning.
Planning and Access for Disabled People: a good practice guide
This 2006 government good practice guide, describes how all those involved in the development process can deliver physical environments which can be used by everyone. It encourages local planning authorities and developers to consider access for disabled people, and stresses the importance of early consultation with disabled people. The guide explains the relevant legislation and policy frameworks, shows how local planning authorities can put in place appropriate planning policies and development control processes and suggests ways in which these can be implemented and enforced effectively. A clear message is that this makes good economic sense as well as being socially responsible.

Design and access statements. How to write, read and use them
This comprehensive 2007 guide from CABE concentrates on design and access statements. It explains what design and access statements are and how they work, shows people who are writing statements what to include, and explains how local authority planners and councillors and anyone else considering a planning application can use statements to check if the proposal is good enough to approve.

Applying inclusive design principles to eco-town development: eco-towns inclusive design worksheet
This 2009 government document provides advice and guidance to planners, designers and policy-makers on how to implement ‘inclusive design’ principles in primarily residential eco-town developments. It provides an explanation of the principles of inclusive design and explains how these principles can be implemented in practice. It sets out issues at a strategic level, but it should not be seen as definitive detailed design guidance. It then details what needs to be done at each stage of the development and design process using the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) ‘Plan of Work’ stages as a framework.

Inclusive Projects - A guide to inclusive project management
This 2003 DPTAC, CABE document has stood the test of time to develop a strategic structure that can be implermented during a large project to ensure that access for disabled people is inclusive throughjout the project life and in the ultinate outcome. It includes practical guidance on team structure, management, and input phases aswell as more detailed design guidance.

Planning for Inclusive Access in Wales
This 2010 document offers succinct guidance on the reasons behind inclusive planning and the practical implementation of inclusive planning practices. It includes several CPD exercises to encourage understanding of disability models, legislation and the principles of inclusive design. The guide is strong on the practical neccessities of involving, engaging and implementing consultation with disabled people.

Essential Priciples: Creating an Accessible & Inclusive Environment
This 2017 document produced by the CIC (Construction Industry Council) provides a succinct guide to the six principles of access and inclusive design that all construction professionals should sucscribe to and apply to projects. The principles are endorsed by the government Office for Disability Issues with the goal of providing a more sustainable and inclusive environment for everone. The guide is direct, short and offers excellent principles that everyone should adopt as a matter of course.
